Moving with kids: a calm, week-by-week checklist

A grounded plan that prioritizes school continuity, emotional steadiness, and predictable routines over the perfect packing system.

Eight weeks out: pick the school before the house

Boundary lines decide more than zip codes do. Map your top three candidate addresses to their assigned schools, then read each school's explainer rather than just the rating. A 7/10 elementary with strong parent reviews often beats a 9/10 one in transition.

Four weeks out: tell the kids a story they can hold

Children handle moves better when there's a simple, repeatable narrative: where we're going, why, what stays the same. Walk them through the new neighborhood on a map. Show the park. Show the route to school.

Two weeks out: protect routines, not boxes

Bedtimes, meal patterns, and weekend rituals matter more than packing speed. Order takeout earlier than you think you need to. The goal of the last two weeks isn't efficiency — it's stability.
